Zitat: |
Here is a little back story, from my perspective, of the making of Dvd and CD release......
All these mad ideas always start with one of our long telephone calls. Me and Paul Harris. Disappointed with the BBC documentary we decided to give it a go and interview the people involved with the making Tubular Bells, and ask the questions we wanted answering. We knew that was a real magical sequence of events connecting the Manor studios, Tubular Bells and the birth of Virgin records.
Paul set about setting up the interviews, the first being Tom Newman. This was more of a test run to see how it would go. Four hours of interview later and we new it would work, though we had only got to the point where Tom set foot into the Manor !
Paul worked tirelessly to set up the interviews and we set about putting together a team.
Andrew Lawson with his cameras and sound recording equipment, who by the end of it is now an authority on the history of the Manor studios, Paul Harris with his questions was the interviewer chief and myself along to chip in with a few questions at the end, knowing that I would have to edit it all. It was hard at the beginning, because we didn’t know what the story was going to be. This got easier as we had more information.
Philip Newell we interviewed in front of an open fire, in a cosy old haunt of Mike Oldfield’s near Hergest Ridge, where I learnt that the drums on the Exposed CD where all recorded to one track in mono. Wow.
We had a 2nd interview with Tom at Luke Oldfield’s studio, where Mike recorded Five Miles Out and Moonlight Shadow. That was weird on many accounts, including watching Luke listen to Tom reminisce about Mike at the manor.
It was bizarre to hear what mad details some people could remember and how some of had just been lost over the years.
Also different people had different accounts of events from their perspective. It was captivating, like being there back in 1972.
Jon Field and Steve Broughton, names I had only read as credits on the back fo Tubular Bells. Steve Hillage, a real musical hero. So many treats for both of us.
We had to know when to stop, as we could have gone on and on. With 12 hours of footage to work through we called it a day and set about editing it down. We could have butchered it down to 60 mins, but as enthusiasts our selves, we thought that people would want to hear all the gold we had found. So 12 hours became 4 hours.
Along side the video filming, we had thought about what we would use as a soundtrack to the footage. As there are always nightmares getting clearance to use the original. I set about recording a few section of Tubular Bells with Les Penning to use as the soundtrack. They came out so good that I did consider doing it all, but Paul came up with the better idea of asking all those musicians who have been influenced by Mike and also had played with him, to contribute to a new version.
My worry was that it wouldn’t all join, and it would jar if different people recorded and mixed different section, so thats when we thought about Tom Newman doing a complete new mix from the multi tracks supplied by each artist. As it turned out, the mixes supplied by the artist actually joined really well and gave an alternate version to what Tom eventually did.
So we had 4 hours of documentary and 2 Cds worth of music. There then followed the usual over excitement by me and Paul where we decided upon an elaborate presentation of the product, always trying to give value for money and what the fans would like. So various tests and pre production versions followed.
With everything gone to press, what followed was a few weeks right at the end of fractious tension getting it all officially cleared and payed for regarding copyright and permissions.
It’s been a long journey , but we both hope that you’re excited about the final results as we are.
